Lana'i

On Monday we went to the offshore island of Lana'i. This island was owned by Drummond Dole who converted it into a pineapple plantation. It is now owned by David Murdock and is more of a tourist destination with great beaches and trails to hike on.

We came out here on a rubber raft. We were warned ahead of time that the ocean was choppy and, if we wanted to, we could back out....we didn't....and are we glad! The ride was the best part of the trip. We got a bit wet on the way over, but that was not a problem.

We stopped at one place where people who wanted to snorkel could do that, then we continued to the island itself where we were dropped off and picked up later by the raft people. They gave us a boxed lunch to eat while out there.

There was a picnic area on the beach where we ate lunch and did some swimming. Gary and I hiked along a trail where we got some pictures off the cliff.

About 3:30 we were picked up...they told us the ride home would be even rougher as the wind had picked up....20 - 25 mph and that we would cut straight across the channel. This was even better than the ride over in the morning. We flew over some huge waves....we were sitting near the front of the raft and didn't get as wet as the people in the back, but they got soaked.

We saw some whales on the way back. They slowed the raft down so we could watch them. There was a mom and her calf and two males. That was pretty cool....we didn't get any pictures of them, though. They don't stay out of the water long enough and pose for pictures. You'll all have to go yourselves to see them...whale season ends in April...they are on their way to Alaska.

When we got back to Lahaina, we went out for pizza at BJ's Chicago Pizzeria where we had some of the best Chicago style pizza outside of Chicago.
